Customer Solution Architect

Fujitsu Services UK
09.2007 - 01.2013
  • During this period, I was as a Customer Solution Architect specialising in Service Oriented Architecture and Microsoft Cloud Development working for the UK market
  • Over the years I have worked on a number of projects, all based around the concept of “industrialisation” of software services where development costs can be greatly reduced and productivity is greatly increased by the use of custom tooling and processes
  • I have been involved in the following projects
  • Velocity and Windows Azure Centre of Excellence Team
  • As a member of the Windows Azure Centre of Excellence Team I am responsible for the technical direction and guidance on Fujitsu’s Cloud activities within Fujitsu Global using the Microsoft’s Windows Azure Platform
  • As Part of this activity I have Envision, Architected and Developed a Cloud Acceleration tool called “Velocity” which is now used throughout the Fujitsu Global Organisation including Fujistu America, India, Australia, Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom
  • Velocity is the code name for a Software Factory that extends the Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2010 development platform to considerably reduce the implementation time for business applications targeting the Microsoft Windows Azure Cloud Platform
  • It takes the form of a Domain Specific Language, a graphical modelling tool, to describe the application in terms of its Information Architecture
  • From this model, Velocity creates a runnable implementation according to a service-oriented application design pattern that is ready to deploy directly to the Cloud
  • This is the starting point from which application developers implement the remaining functional aspects such as specific business logic/rules or non-functional elements such as look and feel
  • Velocity allows for the modelling of a complete application or elements of an application and in this way is flexible to support hybrid solutions where different elements are running on the Cloud and other elements are running on-premise
  • As an additional benefit, Velocity generates a Software Architecture Document to accompany the application
  • Velocity abstracts many of the complexities of building applications for Windows Azure including federated security using The Microsoft Windows Azure Access Control Service, state management using Windows Azure AppFabric Cache and data management using SQL Azure
  • Architects and Developers can concentrate their efforts on the delivery of high-value business functionality rather than low-value platform integration
  • The output that Velocity generates is based around the following technologies:
  • NET Framework 4.0, C#, ASP.NET MVC 3, Telerik ASP.NET MVC Extensions, and Entity Framework 4.1 Code First, Windows Communication Foundation, Enterprise Library 5.0, Windows Azure 1.6 SDK, SQL Azure
  • Fujitsu have recently got Microsoft to review Velocity and its output and the findings have been that it can save up 65% - 80% on Suitable Small Projects and 25% - 35% on Suitable Large Projects
  • The velocity tooling was used on a large number of projects throughout the Fujitsu global organisation for both internal and external applications and a case study of one of these applications can be found on the Microsoft website: http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/Case_Study_Detail.aspx?CaseStudyID=5000000041
  • My responsibilities on this project were:
  • Envisioned the Project
  • Chief Architect for the tooling
  • Architected and Developed the Domain Specific Language tool

  • Provided guidance on the use of Velocity
  • SOA Tooling
  • During this period, I was funded to take a previously developed proof-of-concept SOA software factory and take it into a fully fledge product
  • This was developed as a Domain Specific Language for Visual Studio 2008 and was based around Microsoft technologies for SOA implementation, including Windows Communication Foundation, ASP.NET and SQL Server
  • This tool was very much aimed at developers and architects and required a deep understanding of Microsoft technology concepts
  • TRIOLE for Application
  • During this period, I was responsible for the implementation of a Service Oriented Architecture development process extension to Fujitsu’s Essential Unified Process and an associated SOA reference architecture
  • This role was as an Enterprise Architect with capability modelling at its heart
  • I lead a small team to deliver this project on time and in budget
  • The output of this activity is now currently used by all users of Fujitsu’s Development Lifecycle (APT) engaged in SOA engagements
  • The SOA process was developed with the aid of Ivar Jacobson Consulting
  • During this period, I was also invited onto a review board of the then upcoming version of Visual Studio (2010) around the area of software factories and I then introduced the idea of a proof-of-concept of a software factory for SOA, which I subsequently developed.
