Junior Cert and Leaving Cert -

St. Patrick's College, Cavan
Cavan
2014 - 2019

Skills

  • Teamwork and Collaboration
  • Active Listening
  • Attention to Detail
  • Problem-Solving
  • Microsoft Tools
  • SDS PAGE
  • Western Blot
  • Protein Purification
  • PCR
  • Cell Culture

Research Project

  • Culturing different strains of E. coli cells under a sterile environment and using optimal conditions and techniques like IMAC purification and BSA assays to purify and quantify protein, respectively.
  • Making up western blot and coomassie stained gels to evaluate the yield and purity of Cyclophilin A at different steps and optimize the experiment.
  • Preparing samples for mass spectrometry (MS) by removing contaminants and undergoing multiple steps to ensure the sample was ready for MS.
  • Using statistical analysis and bioinformatic techniques to look at the MS data and create visual models that can narrow down the most significant results.
  • Presenting a PowerPoint presentation based on the research project to my peers and professors and demonstrating my deep knowledge and understanding validated by multiple scientific literature.

Accomplishments

  • Thoroughly understanding many biochemistry techniques, such as spectrophotometry, pH and pKa measurements, isolation and transformation of DNA, enzyme assays, and analysis of urine and blood samples for specific markers for diagnosis.
  • Working with multiple bioinformatic tools in both analyzing and processing complex information for genes and proteins in a research context.
  • Leading projects and presentations as part of a group while actively integrating ideas from all members to ensure an interesting and coherent project.
  • Managing a group of 300 students as a class representative and working to communicate between the lecturer and my peers through meetings to discuss coursework, exams, and the pace of the material covered.
  • Representing my school at public meetings and acting as a role model both academically and in my extracurricular activities.
  • Participating in extracurricular activities such as basketball, football, and kickboxing while being a member of the chess and games club.
  • Volunteering for the Cara program to help transfer students settle into university life through regular meetings.
  • Overseeing and managing a games club for freshmen students.
  • Running a demonstration for my school's kickboxing club by managing, planning, and participating in demonstrations of the club's activities for open day.
