Within my current role as a community worker, I work on a programme called the Empowering Communities Programme, which is targeted based on deprivation. This post requires collaboration with communities to collectively address needs identified by residents, working with numerous statutory and non-statutory agencies towards social inclusion and social justice. This involves meeting groups and individuals regularly, utilising appropriate emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills. Within this role I have also:

  • Conducted surveys to understand communal needs, resulting in relevant program development. I have organised and developed programmes based on the needs of the community, drawing on resident feedback as well as other sources, such as the Central Statistics Office.
  • Facilitated enhanced mutual trust within the community via consistent transparency.
  • Fostered a sense of belonging amongst community members by leading engagement activities.
  • Increased community involvement by initiating and organising local events.

The role also requires significant administrative duties, such as fulfilling multiple reporting obligations, including annual plan reports from bimonthly to annual. I require proficient IT skills in the Microsoft Office suite of software products. I manage a yearly budget for the programme and complete the procurement for all associated costs in line with internal procurement guidelines.

Empowering Communities Engagement Support

This part-time role was to support the community engagement officer with making initial consultations with residents of West Urban Athy on opportunities and challenges within the area and supporting residents to lead their own response to area-based challenges. The role also involved networking and collaboration with local stakeholders and assisting with regular reporting requirements. I also provided support for the partnership by conducting a county profile for the new SICAP application.

Accomplishments

I am a T6/7 paraplegic and I represented Ireland at an international level and have competed at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games for wheelchair racing.


I have been honoured to have won the Dublin City Marathon nine times. I have also won multiple road races in the U.S and across Europe.


I continue to be a high-performance athlete and compete as an invited athlete on the World Major Marathon Series. To date, I have placed in the top 5 in Berlin, Chicago, New York and Boston.


In 2016 I was awarded Kildare Inspirational Personal of the Year by Kildare County Council

Affiliations

  • My passion is disability sport and the power it has to challenge stereotypes and promote social inclusion, while building peoples confidence. A lot of my spare time is taken up by training for my sport. I also enjoy going for "walks" with my wife and family time is very important to me. I have regularly provided talks for schools and corporations on subjects such as road safety, empowerment and disability awareness I am an ambassador for the IWA Sport and attend regular events to promote disability sport at weekends.
