Summary

I have been working in the childcare sector for 35 years.

I own my Montessori School at present but will be closing it down in July.

I have gained valuable experience working with children with various additional needs. These include Autism, ADHD, Ataxia, Asperger's and Dyspraxia. I have learnt a lot about these conditions but know there is so much more to experience. I have done the LINC Diploma so to better understand these conditions so I can care for these children to the best of my ability. My school was an inclusive one for all. I had such a diverse cultures in my school and we all learnt from each other which I think made us all stronger and caring towards everyone.

  • I owned and managed my own my Montessori School for 12 years and it was an Montessori/Aistear based curriculum.
  • I have 3 staff members and 22 children in my school.
  • It was my job as manager to make sure that the school was an inclusive one for all children and staff.
  • Parents involvement was very important.
  • Each child was important and it was up to myself and my team to make sure each child developed to their full potential.
  • We worked along side Aims, Better Start, Speech & Language Therapist and OT.
  • I did the LINC diploma to better my understanding of how to cater for children with different additional needs in my school.
  • I have worked with children with ADHD, Ataxia, Autism, Asperger's and Dyspraxia.
  • I had a sensory room built for children to have a safe place where they can go if the get overwhelmed and need time out. I am familar with a lot of the equitment which makes up a sensory room.
  • I am familar with the pecs language series, we used this with the children who had difficult with change. We also found it great when we had children who came from different countries and no, no english, we used the pecs series with them.
  • There was some refregues from Africa and Ukraine so it was a very diverse cultural in my school. We all learnt about each other and I think made us all stonger and more accepting of each other.
  • I have learnt a lot in my years at Bright Sparks but I know there is so much more to learn.

  • My job was to work with a girl with Ataxia.
  • I worked with her for her 8 years until she went on to secondary school.
  • I worked closely with her teachers, OT and Speech and language therapist.

  • Quickly learned and applied new skills to daily tasks, improving efficiency and productivity.

  • I worked with a boy who had ADHD.
  • The child who I was a support too loved to annoy other children by kicking, hitting or biting them so I had to vigilant at all times so he didn't hurt them.
  • I supported him for 1 year, he then left to go back to Dublin.
  • I then worked with a girl who was in a nappies for personal reasons.
  • I was there as a support to her for the following 2 years.
  • I supervised classes when teachers were out.
  • I supervised classes when teachers had their lunch.
