Summary

My name is Emma Ryan and I am 24 years old. I am nearing the end of my BA Level 8 in Counselling Skills and Psychotherapy Studies at the Irish College of Humanities and Applied Sciences. I completed my Leaving Certificate in 2019 and decided to take a gap year before starting college. During that year I worked in hospitality and that decision benefited me greatly as I matured, I learned more about myself as a person and I worked on my confidence. I started a certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy in March of 2020 at ICHAS but due to the Covid pandemic, I was unable to finish it. I decided to take the plunge and apply for the BA in Counselling and Psychotherapy the following September.

I have since completed 4 years and I made the executive decision to defer my final year in 2023 to allow myself more time to get the most out of my placements. This allowed me to take my time with sessions and learn as much as I possibly could about working with clients. For my third year placement hours I worked as a classroom assistant in Nenagh Community Training Centre working alongside their own counsellor. I also worked with an online counselling platform called Turn2me, which I still work with presently. In February 2025 I started as a student counsellor with Mymove in Limerick. These experiences allowed me to apply my knowledge to real life situations with clients, practice the core conditions and therapeutic interventions/modalities, and build meaning relationships with my clients.

I am eager to continue my learning and put my counselling skills to good use. I have great interpersonal skills, such as active listening, communication skills, and can use my own initiative which is needed in the workplace. I have a willingness to learn with a genuine love and interest in helping people.
