Volunteer Wizards of Words Programme

The Wizard of Words Programme is a reading initiative aimed at improving children's literacy skills. It is for second class children who are behind in their reading. This programme works one-on-one with children to read specific stories and provide individualised tuition to each child. I worked with two children twice per week during school hours.

This is an after school programme. I Provided assistance to the project worker in supporting 5th and 6th class children, who are at risk of leaving school early, to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to remain and participate more effectively in school. It was hoped that through this programme the young person would reach their full potential both academically and socially, and that the barriers to school attendance would be reduced.
