Dolphins Barn Fire Station

Summary

  • Motivated firefighter with over 20 years of experience, resourceful and well-organised with excellent leadership and team-building record, like to lead by example.
  • Prior to joining the fire brigade, I worked in a hydraulics company, started at junior level and finished as manager.
  • I've always wanted to be a firefighter, I applied for Cork and Galway fire service, but unfortunately, I was unsuccessful. As a result of this I passed the IFE preliminary course, got my C licence, joined civil defence to help my DFB application. I was successful and joined the DFB in 2003 and have 20 years' experience, spending time in no.2 and no.7 station. I have done many courses including SRT, Rope Rescue, Supervisor. I always apply for courses MER and am waiting to do Tall & Complex & heavy rescue, recently applied for driving instructor role but was unsuccessful.
  • I have been previously unsuccesful in the sub officer competition. As a result of this I realised my shortcomings and have since addressed these.
  • I have a passion for the job, so much so I've been referred to as Mr. Fire Brigade, due to the work I have done in no.2 station, including looking after station décor including pictures, a deceased members wall and two digital screens that display photographs from the past and present.
  • Dublin Fire Brigade museum curator, scanning old photographs and negatives to digitally preserve the history of the fire brigade.
  • Dublin Fires Brigade Anbulance 125th event

There are hundreds if not thousands of old photographs and articles in boxes and presses in the museum and OBI. I had the idea of scanning and digitizing all the photos and articles with the intention of preserving DFB history and displaying same. My idea also included the installation of new screens in the OBI for the purpose of displaying the photos and articles. The BTO facilitated me with some days in the OBI museum to scan photos and articles onto a hard drive. I hope to have the project completed and ready in early 2022.RTA Equipment Bag InitiativeWhile checking of motors at start of a shift, I would often come across the RTA tape loose and wrapped around equipment in the locker and the line marking spray missing nozzles making them useless. These spray bottles would end up becoming redundant and need to be replaced even though they weren't empty, costing DFB money. I discovered that these pieces of equipment would fit into one of the life jacket bags perfectly, therefore protecting the equipment. I approached my Sub Officer with my idea and he showed the District Officer. They liked the idea and forwarded it to the D/O in charge of logistics, after a number of emails between us we arranged to get the bags made in orange to distinguish them from the life jackets. All the appliances in Dolphins Barn Station are now fitted with these bags and have proved to be a great success. On Station Events CoordinatorI was instrumental in organizing and retaining the on station Christmas family party and summer BBQ. This involved organizing the day and ensuring visitors safety while in the stationI plan and organize station trips and social nights.I setup and maintain the stations savings fund and contributions.I designed and implemented the on station museum, to display artifacts and which includes two visual displays of photographs that represent the lifetime of the station and personnel who have served there as well as incidents attended.I am a regular contributor of information to the Dublin Fire Brigade social media account.I am the D Watch representative for the Dolphins Barn Fire Station Social Committee.St. Kevin's Killian's GAA ClubI am involved as a mentor with the under 7 GAA team both football and hurling.
