Four years living in an off grid community in the vast Savannah of eastern Brazil. During this time, the small community of 30 people grew most of the food consumed. This was a process of deep immersion, going from limited knowledge of horticulture to a working/practical knowledge of cultivation in a short time. Much of the community activity was organised around the growing season, focused in the cultivation of crops. This initial interest in horticulture began as a necessity for community living and has since developed into a deep commitment to understanding plant sciences and using that knowledge to create and maintain beautiful, and functional landscapes. This practical experience has encouraged my appetite for horticulture and has given me a practical foundation in horticulture.
