I have worked for Liam O'Brien since April 2022. Liam O'Brien has a racing yard in Bennetsbridge County Kilkenny. On the weekend and the holidays due to me being in school studying for my leaving cert. There are a range of different horses which include flat, national hunt, point to pointers and breakers. All of these horses have given me a lot of different experiences with a range of different horses.
My main roles include general yard duties such as mucking out, feeding and turning horses out. I ride a wide range of horses from breakers all the way to staying chasers. I work horses and school them. I also have the responsibility to reported any changes in horses' condition or behaviour immediately, ensuring swift action could be taken when necessary. I also travel with horses to the races, saddle them and lead them up and then look after them after the race which includes washing, walking and applying cooling clay to their legs.
I work at Castlekelly owned by Nicky Roncoroni since June 2021. Castlekellyis a eventing yard specialising in competition, sales and producing of young horses.
I work weekends as I'm in school doing my Leaving Cert and I work any holidays. My main roles involve general yard duties such as mucking out, turning horses out, cleaning tack. I also groom for Nicky Roncoroni at events around the country including internationals. I ride all the horses in the yard from young to school masters this riding involves hacking out, schooling, jumping. and cross country schooling. I also have the responsibility to monitor all the horses wellbeing which includes monitoring their condition and checking their legs. I can then immediately report if something is abnormal or if something needs to be checked.
I pride myself on my discipline, honesty, determination and attention to detail I have learnt a multitude of skills from working in the equine industry which include time management this is important as it is critical to be on time and to have horses ready at the times they are needed at Attention to detail which is extremely important when working with horses as it is crucial to monitor their wellbeing and health at all times I believe it is exceptionally important to be honest and determined when working as this will allow the workplace to function in a more economical way
I believe I have a wide range of qualities and skills when it come to working with horses which include the handling of young horses, having a well kept stable yard to prevent and accidents, to have horses looking and feeling the best they physically can I have the skill to keep equipment organised clean and ready for use which is important for the efficient running of a yard
